Yesterday we did a bunch of stuff in downtown SF, including a night tour of Alcatraz, which was quite spooky. But before going to the ferry we stopped at yet another one of my SF vegan friendly food destinations - The Plant cafe at Pier 3 on the Embarcadero.
The atmosphere was really nice and we sat out on the patio. It was a chilly day so they had the windows closed, but the view was pretty great regardless.
In preparation for the cold ferry ride I got myself the Antioxidant Cocktail (bourbon, lemonade and acai liquor).
The lunch menu was quite limited and I was somewhat upset that we did not get to explore the full dinner menu which started at 7pm. The daytime menu consisted of a few salads, their signature Plant burgers and individual pizzas. We both decided on the Plant burger, and it was the right choice. Ace got the California plant burger, and I got the veganized version of the Mushroom & Swiss burger (with no cheese). Both were absolutely delicious. The patty itself is made out of lentils, beets, mushrooms, bulgarian wheat and cashews. I would say the beets definitely dominate the taste in the patty, which I rather enjoyed, since it reminded me of the beet cutlets my mother makes all the time (as you probably know, beets are quite popular in Russian cuisine). But Ace was right, it definitely was more of a sandwich than a burger, since it was on whole wheat sliced bread, and not on a bun. Technicalities aside it was a delicious light lunch!
The Plant Cafe has three locations in SF and if you are visiting I highly recommend you stop by for dinner, even if you aren’t vegan - they have plenty of options for all.
